Ductless Air Conditioning

Ductless Air Conditioning, also called a mini-split system, is an air conditioning solution that doesn't require ducts installed in the walls of a house. A ductless air conditioning system is primarily made up of two separate units. The inside unit contains the evaporator and blower, and the outside unit has the condenser and compressor. These are connected by refrigerant lines that are much smaller than a duct and allow for the units to be installed in older houses or rooms that do not have ducts built in or where it is too expensive or difficult to install the ductwork for central air.

How Does Ductless Air Conditioning Work?

Ductless air conditioning is very similar to a regular air conditioning unit except that the cooling is handled with the two units. The indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser work in tandem to remove heat from the air in your room or house and move it outside. It is not dissimilar from the way a refrigerator works, using refrigerant and energy to transfer heat from the area that needs to be cooled into the area that is already warmer. The refrigerant lines that connect the indoor and outdoor units are key to the removal of heat from a room and allow for less indoor space to be taken up by keeping the compressor outside. Water condensate can be easily drained outside from the compressor unit as well.

Features and Advantages to Ductless Air Conditioning

Because there are no ducts to install, installation is quick and easy. There are no major holes to cut out of walls, you don't lose any window space, and the indoor and outdoor units are relatively small. Ductless air conditioning is more efficient than window units or portable units, and because the compressor unit is outside, they are very quiet as well. Ductless air conditioning do not take up floor space like a portable unit or need to be moved in and out of the window depending on the change of seasons. A ductless air conditioner will not pose a potential security issue like a window unit and most come with good thermostats to keep your room at a regular temperature instead of trying to monitor the blasting cold air on and off on your own. They also usually have remotes for blowing and temperature control so it is easy to adjust the temperature from anywhere in the room.

I am so glad I read this. I will be renovating an older home that does not have central air and was looking for a cost-effective way to cool the home. Thanks!
