PS3 Controller Choices

Sony Sixaxis Playstation 3 DualShock 3 Wireless Controller - Obviously, the controller made by Sony themselves is the highest quality and best build out of the controllers you can buy. It is solid in your hands, all the buttons feel great, and they last a long time. Every button is analog, meaning that you can press the "triangle" button with different pressure and in certain games this will be recognized. This allows for extremely deep gameplay and the full experience of games that is intended by Sony and the game developers.

Third Party PS3 Controllers - There have always been companies that sell cheaper, third party controllers for consoles. This is not different with Playstation 3 controllers. Some of the more popular brands that have stood the test of time and hold up relatively well are Nyko and Madcatz. There are many other "knock-off" brands and controllers out there too. These controllers range from wireless to wired, and may not have all the motion sensing and analog controls like Sony's Dualshock 3. They are, however, MUCH cheaper. Where the Dualshock 3 costs around $60, many third party controllers can cost $25 and under.

Special PS3 Controllers (fighting sticks and pads) - Fighting games like Street Fighter 4, Tekken, and the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and new Mortal Kombat have long had dedicated players that want dedicated controllers just for those games. Some of these include fighting sticks that emulate the type of controls that you'd find in an arcade. Other pads have a different layout that are more suited to stringing together combos and using certain moves in fighting games. Fighting sticks are usually very expensive, almost always breaching the $100 mark, whereas fighting pads may be more reasonable and around the Dualshock 3 price. These pads and sticks are usually made by third parties that specialize in their design and manufacture and are of very high quality for the most hardcore gamers.

Playstation 3 Move Controllers - The Playstation Move was announced in great detail earlier this year, and will be hitting store shelves and online marketplaces shortly. The PS3 Move will incorporate two wireless controllers and the Playstation Eye to make use of its motion sensing games. The Move controller has a colored ball that is tracked by the Playstation Eye, and there is a Navigation Controller that is held in the other hand with an analog stick and additional buttons. Many have compared this setup to the Nintendo Wii, with the Move controller being compared to the Wiimote and the Navigation controller being compared to the Nunchuck. These new controllers can be bought in a bundle or individually. Buying PS3 bundles are a great way to save money and get all the accessories or items that you need at the same time.

It will be interesting to see how controllers evolve. The Wii was the first to really revolutionise the market and it's interesting to see Microsoft and Sony playing keep up wanting a share of their market.

What I really like about the PS3 is that they controllers are wireless. This makes playing on the console much more comfortable.
